Sangamon County Learning Academy
The Sangamon County Learning Academy (SCLA) is a grant funded program (TAOEP) housed in the Capital Area Career Center Building at 2201 Toronto Road in Springfield. The Regional Office of Education operates the program to meet the needs of the non-traditional and truant students of Sangamon County, including truants, chronic truants, and potential high school dropouts due to truancy issues. The Learning Academy is designed to assist students in credit recovery (due to truancy) with modified instruction and services in addition to promoting better attendance. Due to the nature of the TAOEP grant, is important to note that truancy must be the primary reason for student referrals. The program is not an alternative site for students with chronic disciplinary problems or solely in need of credit recovery.
In order to be eligible to attend the Learning Academy, the home school principal or their designee must submit a referral to the Learning Academy principal. The typical referral process may take up to a week and includes a pre-meeting with parents, student, home school counselor/principal and administrators from SCLA. Upon acceptance into the program, all students will be reevaluated periodically throughout the year and again at the end of the school year to determine the next year’s placement. Seniors who complete the home school requirements while in attendance at SCLA are eligible to receive a home school diploma. For more information on the Learning Academy program, call 529-3390.
